This panel will focus on the need to make “safe” the new “sustainable" and will help to bring to the forefront of the discussion the need to focus on the health implications of the products we all use everyday. It will discuss why exposure to small amounts of toxic chemicals everyday matters to our heath, and how toxins get into the products on store shelves in the first place. It will then dive into meaningful solutions—how we can make changes in our personal lives, businesses, and influence changes in legislation and in society to improve safety, health, quality of life and American innovation.

Hungry for more food-related content at SXSW? So were we! Enter stage, SouthBites. In-line with the key SXSW Interactive principles of creativity, community and innovation, SouthBites is the newest component to the SXSW Interactive Conference and Festival, and our mission is to showcase a community of innovators through the lens of food.
SouthBites creates a platform for food enthusiasts to meet, exchange ideas and explore ways in which technology can be leveraged to transform the food industry. SouthBites sessions and events will take place Saturday, March 14 through Monday, March 16 and is open to Interactive, Gold and Platinum registrants. Featured Speaker David Chang, chef and founder of Momofuku, will kick things off on Saturday and set the bar high for the remainder of the conference. Highlighting speakers from different disciplines within the food industry, we will bring to the table unique discourse on innovations in food.
We were excited to see the number of inventive ideas submitted to the PanelPicker, and this first round of confirmed content is just a sampling of the diverse programming you can expect to see at SouthBites 2015:
In addition to the 30 sessions that will take place at the Driskill Hotel, we've curated a handful of evening events to round out the program. SouthBites will host an industry craft cocktail hour, intimate dining experience and a wrap party at the SouthBites Trailer Park.
HOW TO GET INVOLVED: Want to speak around a food-related topic at SouthBites? We’re always excited to hear new, inventive ideas. For more information on opportunities for involvement, contact: Sarah Garcia.
A world-renowned thinker in the impact of design on every day life, Paola Antonelli, Senior Curator of Architecture & Design and Director of Research & Development at MoMA in New York City will serve as the Friday, March 13 Keynote at SXSW Interactive 2015.
Antonelli’s work investigates design’s influence on everyday experience. By including overlooked and unexpected objects and practices, and combining design, architecture, art, science and technology we feel she speaks to the large design community that attends our Austin event.
Outside of her role as Senior Curator of Architecture and Design at MoMA, Antonelli was appointed director of a new Research and Development initiative in 2012. An energetic and generous cultural thinker who is currently working on a project that considers the manifestations of violence in contemporary society through the lens of design, and a series of experiments on the intersection of physical and digital in museums and curatorial practice, Antonelli is a true interdisciplinary.
The 2015 SXSW Interactive Festival includes one Keynote per day for all five days of the event. Keynotes for Saturday, March 14; Sunday, March 15; Monday, March 16 and Tuesday, March 17 will be announced in the coming weeks so stay tuned to our website or sign up to receive our weekly newsletter.

This summer, SXSW Interactive put out a call to recognize individuals using innovative technology and new media to address significant community challenges. This program sought nominees across all sectors and countries whose innovative, impactful work (whether as a career or avocational passion) helps others. Non-profit leaders, grassroots organizers, individual citizens, and civic-minded entrepreneurs were all eligible to win.
At SXSW, we believe that the strength of community comes from diversity of thought, gender, geography, and background. To that end, we use a V-O-W-E-L scale of basic diversity principles in selecting scholarship winners.

She began harnessing the power of the web to teach undocumented immigrants about their rights using YouTube and other social media channels, radically transforming the way legal services were delivered to young people across the country. Atlas:DIY's gaming component now allows users to cash in points earned by sharing content on their own accounts in exchange for actual services, such as a Skype session with an attorney.

Ana Cecilia Castillo for her work as a diversity advocate in tech and especially in the software development industry through Girls @ Tech Guatemala. As one of the relatively new gender initiatives in Latin America, Girls @ Tech is working in two main areas: finding women role models working in technical positions in local industries and encouraging more high school students to choose technical degrees. This program is the first to focus on getting more women in tech in Guatemala and increasing diversity in the local tech scene.

TB and HIV patients in Haiti often move between multiple homes, as necessitated by a lack of resources. Their homes are likely on no maps and the streets near them have no names. Natural disasters, hunger and limited literacy create obstacles to obtaining medications on a regular schedule. However, everyone knows how to use a cellphone – and maybe a few basic applications. Saxe and Coffee have worked to map patient homes and connect them through a simple-to-use patient database.

JAC's mobile and web based application, Louisiana Expungement Application (LEA), will greatly increase access to a much needed service and ensure lawyers working to provide these services can connect with clients in need. JAC hopes to leverage quantitative data collected through the app and direct it toward rational, responsive policy changes in order to increase access to expungements and help to create long term systemic reform in Louisiana's criminal justice system.

Today a child from a low-income family is ten times less likely to earn a college degree than a higher-income peer. Rockne and her colleagues at College Possible provide students with intensive support through the college admission process, guiding them through scholarships, financial aid and the transition to and through college. College Possible students earn college degrees at the same rate as students from all other income levels, effectively closing the degree divide.

He has been a judge on both India's Got Talent, and 1 Minute to Save the World, a competition for short films about climate change. His forthcoming film Paani– the hindi word for water – explores Mumbai's shrinking supply of water and its distributed underworld. Equally at home in Hollywood and Bollywood, he's also a comics mogul; in 2006 he co-founded Virgin Comics as a venue for turning Indian and Hindu myths into pop-culture icons. For the company, now reorganized as Liquid Comics, he co-created the series Ramayan 3392 A.D., based on the Ramayana. His newest Liquid Comics series is Devi.

The first round of 2015 SXSW Showcasing Artists has finally arrived! More than 170 artists from all over the world make up one of the strongest first round artist announcements to date.
At SXSW in March, you’ll hear iconic UK post-punk band The Pop Group, soul-influenced Detroit rapper Black Milk, new buzz acts like Madrid's Deers and Austin's own Institute, a minimalist blend of Yoruba music with modern electronic from XL Recordings’ Ibeyi, contagious electronic pop by Charlotte OC and much more. Australian psych-pop legends The Church will also be performing at the SXSW Music Festival to coincide with their interview at the SXSW Music Conference.
We’re just getting started on the lineup for the 2015 SXSW Music Festival, so there’s plenty more to come. In the meantime, listen to SXSWfm to stay up on the must-listen acts coming to Austin for the festival. We jumped the gun yesterday and previewed some of these artists during a special hour, which you can now hear on SoundCloud.

Here at SXSW, we're in the business of putting on large-scale events. We also both recognize and take accountability for the impact these events have on the environment.
That's why last year at SXSW Eco we began our partnership with Spinfish Event Solutions and diverted over 1200 lbs of waste from the landfill. We're excited to announce that this year, we've nearly doubled that number - diverting 2271 pounds of durable event materials from the landfill through this upcycling program. This is the equivalent of 3.66 empty dumpsters and brings our overall diversion rate to 98 percent.
It's been interesting and exciting for us to see how leftover materials from our event have gone on to benefit the local non-profit, educational, and artist communities. Below are just a few examples:
Foam-core board and other materials will be repurposed for promotional and employee recognition / encouragement for a home assistant care for the disabled, elderly, and the poor.
Print materials, foam-core and shelving units went to a local middle school where it will be used for an up-cycled product competition for 7th and 8th grade students in an environmental elective.
Vinyl, foam-core, and wood-scraps have gone to an artist who owns a walk-in art studio in town.
Wood pallets will be used in a neighborhood composting base.
To date, SXSW & Spinfish have partnered together to divert a total of 12,126 lbs of potential waste.
Thanks to our friends at Spinfish for another successful year!
