Here at SXSW, we're in the business of putting on large-scale events. We also both recognize and take accountability for the impact these events have on the environment.

That's why last year at SXSW Eco we began our partnership with Spinfish Event Solutions and diverted over 1200 lbs of waste from the landfill. We're excited to announce that this year, we've nearly doubled that number - diverting 2271 pounds of durable event materials from the landfill through this upcycling program. This is the equivalent of 3.66 empty dumpsters and brings our overall diversion rate to 98 percent.

It's been interesting and exciting for us to see how leftover materials from our event have gone on to benefit the local non-profit, educational, and artist communities. Below are just a few examples:

  • Foam-core board and other materials will be repurposed for promotional and employee recognition / encouragement for a home assistant care for the disabled, elderly, and the poor.
  • Print materials, foam-core and shelving units went to a local middle school where it will be used for an up-cycled product competition for 7th and 8th grade students in an environmental elective.
  • Vinyl, foam-core, and wood-scraps have gone to an artist who owns a walk-in art studio in town.
  • Wood pallets will be used in a neighborhood composting base.

To date, SXSW & Spinfish have partnered together to divert a total of 12,126 lbs of potential waste.

Thanks to our friends at Spinfish for another successful year!
